In the spirit of supporting local artists, we are doing an artist spotlight series. Our recent artist is Jordan Lee, An Emmy® Award-Winning Designer.
Jordan Wayne Lee is an Emmy® Award-Winning designer with over 10 years of experience designing for web, mobile and print within the entertainment and music industry. Jordan uses his education, experience and interpersonal communication skills to meet and exceed organizational goals. His multidisciplinary skill-set includes design, front-end development, and photography. When he’s not being creative, Jordan spends his time climbing mountains, kayaking, or enjoying nature.
How did you get into design?
As a boy, I used to draw every chance I could. My passion was watching cartoons and constantly drawing various characters. My favorite characters stylistically were Ren and Stimpy. As I grew older, my early teens I discovered punk rock and hardcore. I grew up listening to bands like MxPx, Sunny Day Real Estate, Zao, Frodus, Ninety Pound Wuss, Norma Jean, Embodyment, Blindside, Refused, Stretch Arm Strong, Roadside Monument, Project 86, Warlord, TFU, etc. Aside from drawing, I decided to pick up drums at a young age and then guitar. I was playing in a few bands and realized I could mesh my love of art and design with my love for music. I started doing album covers and merch for my bands and other bands.
Fast forward to college where I began pursuing a degree, taking art classes, photography and playing in about 5 different bands. I would play lots of shows, tour around the southeast and kept designing for bands and venues.
I decided to keep following my first love as a child and continue to pursue a career as a designer, but I saw the growth of the web and I realized this would be a strong platform to pursue and become a designer in this industry.
Where are you from, where did you go to school?
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest just outside of Seattle. I went to college at a private liberal arts university in TN, Lee University.

Paper, pencils, pens, moleskine, Photoshop, Illustrator
What websites do you go to for design inspiration?
I have a curated list of about 1600 design sources. I can’t really pick a favorite, but I’ve been building that list for about 8 years. I’d be more than happy to share it with anyone who is interested.
What is your favorite movie, band, and artist?
Movie: A River Runs Through It. Fly fishing and a story of two brothers.
Band: Sigur Ros. They’ve been my favorite band since the Ágætis byrjun album.

Iceland. Everything about this place is mysterious and inspiring.
When you’re not designing, what do you like to do?
Camp, hike, fish, mountaineering, photography, travel, business ventures.
If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
I’d like to throw an awesome a dinner party with the following gentlemen. The mix of experiences and personalities would prove for an interesting and exciting time.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?
Learn grids, typography and front-end development skills. Find developers and people who don’t design; learn from them, they will make you better. Stay curious and always follow your instincts. Learn about those who have come before you and study the history of design. Make mistakes early and never be afraid to keep making new mistakes. Design is about overcoming your fear of failure and finding the best solution.

ESPN No Love Lost
Emmy® Award Winning design for “Outstanding New Approaches”, No Love Lost is a web design project showcasing the century-long struggle of the Chicago Cubs. For years, the Chicago baseball fans have dealt with the agony of defeat in hopes of seeing their team achieve the true thrill of victory one day. From 100 year old fan, Richard Savage, to Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins; this project showcases Chicago Cubs baseball fans over the course of 100 years.
Walt Disney World Homepage
As the Subject Matter Expert for responsive design with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online, I worked directly with UX, Creative Directors, and Content Strategists to design a responsive approach for the new Walt Disney World homepage design. The goal was to address all of the business and product goals surrounding the launch of the new web experience and translate those needs across all devices. This proves to be a delicate balancing act of understanding device capabilities, limitations and the prioritization of needs from business and legal stakeholders.
Walt Disney World My Magic +
As Walt Disney World embarked on a new interactive way to engage guests at the park, the starting point began as guests purchased their tickets online. During the checkout process, guests are able to provide relevant information about their trip in order to enhance their Disney experience while staying at Walt Disney World. With such a new and innovative way to engage guests before they enter the park, we needed to provide a way for guests to understand the breadth and depth of these new features throughout the experience. This project serves as a responsive approach to providing the “starting point” for guests to learn and engage with the new Disney experience.
