In the spirit of giving back, and our desire to support local businesses and artists, we are doing an artist spotlight series. We will be showcasing a new artist each day for the next 31 days. Today’s artist is Laura Racero, a digital illustrator.

Laura is currently living in Spain and studied Naval Engineering at Polytechnic University of Madrid. We first saw her stuff on her website and knew our community would love it as much as we did. Please join us in welcoming a very talented digital illustrator to the featured artist family.

About Laura

She is a graphic / web designer and digital illustrator based in Madrid (Spain). She strives to create quality interactive work, while serving as Art and Usability Supervisor at Alternatiba. She began experimenting with various artistic mediums from an early age, and eventually finding home in photography and graphic design which led to expanding her career into web design and photoillustration.

Throughout her 14 years of experience, she has developed projects for clients such as Coca-Cola, Orange, Vodafone, Toys’R’Us, Factory, L’Oréal, Springfield, ‘la Caixa’, Biotherm, Bourjois, Alfa Romeo, Wilkinson and Samsung, only to mention a few. Also, her photoillustrations have been featured in some of the most widely read digital magazines, blogs and in the prestigious Arte & Diseño (Spanish edition of Computer Arts).

Question: How did you get into design?
Laura’s Answer: Since childhood, I have been interested in photography and plastic arts. In my free time, all I did was draw, draw and draw. But it was in college, studying Naval Engineering, when I decided to focus my talents and my skills into graphic design and digital illustration –when my parents bought a computer.

Question: Where are you from, where did you go to school?
Laura’s Answer: I’m from Spain. I studied Naval Engineering at Polytechnic University of Madrid –but I never finished the career.

Question: What are your tools of the trade?
Laura’s Answer: Photoshop. Pencils. Paper. The scanner. A camera. Music.

Question: What is your favorite movie, band, and artist?


Consulting Detective (2014).

Laura’s Answer: OMG… I like so many… I love movies! Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Matrix, Blade Runner, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers, Iron Man, XMen, Indiana Jones, Batman, … Recently, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, The Hobbit, The Fall,… And many, many more. The list is endless.

Music: I also love movies soundtracks. And lately, I listen a lot to Hurts, Bastille, Imagine Dragons, Florence and the Machine and Paloma Faith… But I also love Queen, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Evanescence…

I love the work of Drew Struzan, Dave McKean and Peter Jaworowski.

Question: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?
Laura’s Answer: Practice. A lot. Any time you can. Any time you want. Never stop practicing, learning and observing. Because “excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution.” –Aristotle
