In the spirit of giving back, and our desire to support local businesses and artists, we are doing an artist spotlight series. We will be showcasing a new artist each day for the next 31 days. Today’s artist is James Camilleri, an art and multimedia designer.
James is a multimedia designer and a video game guy. He was originally based in Melbourne, Australia but he currently resides in Hong Kong where he spends his time freelancing and working on a number of personal projects – including designing his own video game.
Question: How did you get into design?
James’s Answer: I’ve always been a creative person, obsessed with art and games, but I never considered design as a career path until I hit high school, that’s where I discovered Photoshop and Flash and started making my own digital art and animations.
At university I took on a bachelor of multimedia course where I learned how to use a variety of design programs, but more importantly I learned the fundamentals of good design and that putting lens flares on everything does not a good design make.
Question: Where are you from, where did you go to school?
James’s Answer: I grew up about an hour away from Melbourne, right on the peninsula. While I love the city it is nice to have a home town that has a slower pace and is right on the beach.
After spending my high school and university years so far from the city I decided to move closer to Melbourne, where I have worked in a few different design studios over the years. I have just moved to Hong Kong this year to try my hand at freelancing and devote more time to working on personal projects.
Question: What are your tools of the trade?
James’s Answer: My laptop, my wacom tablet, my sketchbooks, my notepads and my noggin.
Question: What websites do you go to for design inspiration?
James’s Answer: All sorts. Deviantart, Redbubble, Behance, Tumblr, I also just keep en eye out for cool stuff that might get shared around on any of the social networks and blogs.
Question: What is your favorite movie, band, and artist?
James’s Answer: I love Aliens and the original Predator movie, both of those are probably my favorite movies of all time.
At the moment my favorite band is The Protomen, I was always a big fan but after seeing them perform live (their Queen covers are amazing) they elevated themselves to a higher level for me. Love it.
I would have to say that my favorite artist is Tim Schafer (the creator of Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Brutal Legend), the games he creates always have so much heart and character. You can tell that he really puts his heart and soul into every single game he makes, and that is something to be admired.
Question: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
James’s Answer: I have traveled to quite a few countries but Japan is still on top of my to-do list.
Japan has such a unique culture with so many different and interesting aspects to it, I would love to visit and experience all that it has to offer.
Question: When you’re not designing, what do you like to do?
James’s Answer: In my spare time I enjoy playing video games of all kinds. Whether it is having a blast playing online with my friends, or being immersed in the story and atmosphere of a deep single player game, video games will always be my passion, and in the future I hope that people will enjoy playing games that I create as well.
Question: If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
James’s Answer: I would like to meet H.P. Lovecraft to find out where he drew his inspirations from, and he just seems like a fascinating person in general.
Question:What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?
James’s Answer: I know it sounds corny to say ’Follow your heart’ but… follow your heart. Find what you are passionate about and give it your all, work hard on it and keep working on it, the rest will come in time.
