In the spirit of giving back, and our desire to support local businesses and artists, we are doing an artist spotlight series. We will be showcasing a new artist each day for the next 31 days. Today’s artist is Dominic Bell, a freelance designer and illustrator.
Dominic was pretty late in getting into graphic design and illustration and even later making a break out on his own. He works as a freelance designer but illustration is his first love. He formed Three Black Dots as a creative valve to channel some of the ideas that where kicking around my head.
Question: How did you get into design?
Dominic’s Answer: I went to college in the 90’s but it wasn’t for me at the time. I still kept one foot in the design world though designing artwork for friends bands and the occasional illustration. I went back to college in 2004, graduating with a advanced diploma in graphic design in 2007. I’ve worked both full-time and freelance ever since.
Question: Where are you from, where did you go to school?
Dominic’s Answer: I come from Stevenston in North Ayrshire, Scotland. I studied graphic design at James Watt College and Cardonald College, graduating with a Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design.
Question: What are your tools of the trade?
Dominic’s Answer: Pencils, paper, my trusty old scanner. Nearly all of my work is completed in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Question: What websites do you go to for design inspiration?
Dominic’s Answer: Love abduzeedo.com. Great site to draw inspiration from as well as hosting some really handy tutorials.
Question: What is your favorite movie, band, and artist?
Dominic’s Answer: My favorite movie has to be The Exorcist. I love the films of the seventies and that one scared the bejesus out of me when I was boy.
Music wise I love the Beastie Boys, Boards in Canada, The Small Faces, Northern Soul…
Question: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Dominic’s Answer: I haven’t been to Barcelona yet so that’s up there with on my to do list. I would also like to see more of my own country as well as specially the western isles. Scotland has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Then again I am biased.
Question: When you’re not designing, what do you like to do?
Dominic’s Answer: Hang out with my girlfriend and our dog. Go to gigs, watch films and perfecting the ultimate vegetarian curry
Question: If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
Dominic’s Answer: I would love to meet Jan Svankmajer. I remember stumbling on his film Faust while I was channel hoping. I would love to know about his thought process.
Question: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?
Dominic’s Answer: Don’t give up. Persistence and determination are great assets.
